Dearest Theresa,
I found your site in September and was amazed. I have suffered from bladder issues for the past five years, seen all relevant specialists, had a number of special scans done, been on near a hundred courses of useless antibiotics for non-existent UTIs (which lead to consequential yeast problems) tried a multitude of supplements, restrictions, etc.
What you have discovered and taken the time to publish so professionally has SAVED ME. I thought I would always suffer from excruciating, unpredictable bladder pain, and at long last I am in control of this. I take calcium and magnesium every day (2-4 large capsules of the mag-cal mix), have added fruits and vegetables to all my meals and snacks, have substituted crackers for chips and eat more potatoes. Whenever I eat meat or whole grains I take note and make sure I've got enough fruits, veggies and supplements to cover any pain issues. I'm still trying to figure out how I can safely eat some chocolate (it's a favourite, but almost always leads to pain), and have canceled white wine altogether. (I had already eliminated these two foods from my own experience.)
I am referring your site to anyone I know who has UTI-like problems.
More than anything, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, for showing me how to control and end this pain.
Thank you!!!
Sincerely,
Rachel Sunter

Question: How important is it to check the urine pH with the test paper? Can’t I just take the mineral supplements?
Theresa : You can try the mineral supplement regime given on the Home page of this site (there is a very good chance it will work for you if acid urine is the cause of your pain), but I strongly encourage you to get the test paper and check your urine for these reasons:
- First and foremost, testing yourself with the test paper will show you if acid urine is the cause of your pain. There are a few other causes of urethral pain, including infection which requires medical attention.
- Those mineral supplement dosages work for ME, but your body might need more.
- There is a timing factor that you can manage better if you check your pH a few times per day with the test paper. The body has a natural rhythm or cycle (called the circadian rhythm), and some times of day your body is more acid than others. Once you know this by testing yourself for a week or two, then you won’t need to test so often. I rarely test myself now, because I know the timing and dosage that works for me and I am pain-free.
- If you don’t check your urine pH you won’t really make the connection between what you are supplementing/eating to your pain levels. In other words you won’t have a deep understanding of what is going on in your own body – it will be hit-and-miss. Whereas if you measure your urine pH over a period of time and actually see how that relates to your pain you will develop a sense, a knowing, of what supplements and foods help you the most. You will have the information you need to eliminate your pain without guessing.
The test paper can be purchased online and at some pharmacies – try a hospital pharmacy. It is not expensive (about $9 or $10 for a roll that lasts a long time) and easy to use.
